Black Nativity: Twenty Years of Holiday Cheer! Director Statement Like a rich and vibrant tapestry, Black Nativity has gathered an
expansive family and community over its twenty year history. It
has been my honor to be just one of the many threads woven into
the fabric of that family. Fifteen years ago I began first as a member
of the “sewing circle.” Today, I feel blessed to continue in the griot
tradition as this year’s director.
My life has been shaped and changed by this show. Over the years I
have seen how this piece continues to touch the heart and soul of our
community. It has made me realize both the power and the responsibility of an artist.
I learned and developed my craft through Black Nativity. In the cast and crew I have
met some of my best friends and mentors, people I consider family today.
It is a special privilege to direct a piece that my mentors Lewis Whitlock III and
Lou Bellamy directed before me. I bring all the love, encouragement and care they
invested in me to this year’s production. I am proud and happy to pick up the mantle
to pass on our traditions and tell our stories. With pleasure and humility I welcome
you to the twentieth year of Black Nativity. Enjoy and “Go tell it!”
