Black Nativity - Hear Again the Christmas Story! Dramaturgical Notes
Gathering in to Hear Once Again,
Gathering in as Family
When director Austene Van recounts her memories of her first experience
with Black Nativity over 15 years ago, she describes how it forever changed
her life, in large part because of the family she found in her fellow artists here
at Penumbra. This sentiment is echoed by many of Penumbra's performers and is
evidenced in the company's unique ensemble esthetic which prizes inter-generational
mentoring and emphasizes the strength of the communal over individual stardom.
Here in this place, actors, singers, dancers, designers and technicians come together,
grounded in the company's history, and the history of Black Nativity itself. The
original book of this holiday gospel musical, written in 1961 by playwright and poet
Langston Hughes, has made multiple transformations on Penumbra's stages over
21 years. While the Walker family in Penumbra's contemporary rendition continues
to change this year, through both scripting and embodiment, what has not changed
are the traditions of singing, dancing, quilting, and storytelling at the heart of the
production. More than simple entertainment, these oral and physical histories
bespeak enduring African American values and shape and confirm each family
member's place in the whole. Black Nativity exemplifies these values and invites you,
the audience, to share in them as you hear once again the tale of joy, hope, and faith
that animates the Christmas season. May the spirit of family envelope and enliven
each one of you gathered together in this space this day.
